Enhancing Legal Writing Skills: A Personal Reflection

Wrap Up Discussion:

Overall, I enjoyed this course and learned more than I expected. I initially thought we would mostly review the basic principles of Legal Writing II and complete small assignments. Instead, the course challenged me to apply legal concepts more practically—drafting documents, analyzing cases, and thinking critically about legal problems —as a working paralegal would.

One of the most valuable aspects of the course was learning from the discussion boards and from my classmates’ contributions. Drafting complaints, answers, motions, and contracts gave me greater confidence in my ability to draft documents accurately and to understand the rationale behind each step. I also gained a better understanding of why there is a process and a chain of command in legal writing, as the material logically led to the IRAC assignment.

After that, working through the IRAC, then the interrogatories, and finally the request for production became confusing at times. I was not always sure which document should precede another in the sequence of court filings, but completing them helped me understand each document’s specific purpose in litigation.

If I could change anything, I would make this course sixteen weeks instead of eight. The pace felt fast, and at times it seemed as though we were only scratching the surface of the assignments rather than having sufficient time to delve deeper into the material. The most confusing part for me—and something I am still learning—is mastering the formatting. Getting spacing, structure, and layout exactly right takes practice, but I can already see improvement.

I also appreciate the guidance and feedback throughout the course. Even in a fast-paced eight-week format, the Professor’s guidance helped me stay on track and understand what high-quality legal writing should entail. This course also helped me realize how much I have grown as a legal writer. Initially, the formatting and structure felt overwhelming, but now I can see my progress and understand the rationale behind each requirement.

I appreciate Dr. King’s leadership in guiding me through this course by challenging me beyond my boundaries. I have learned a great deal from even my class peers. I wish everyone all success in their endeavours.
