Insights from Legal Workshops: A Student’s Reflection

Nov. 24, 2024

This paper serves as my extra credit submission for the workshop day reflection. I attended all six workshops because I believed I could gain valuable insights from the guest speakers and my peers. Although the day was long and exhausting, I acquired new knowledge and enjoyed helpful refresher on familiar topics. The workshops began at 1:00 p.m. and featured Professor Jessica Glassburn, Sarah Graham, Professor Lara O’Dell, and Professor Kate Guerro, a Social Hour with Professor O’Dell, and concluded with the Indiana Paralegal Association. Overall, I found each of these workshops informative in their own unique ways.

I recently learned about the concept of a practicum, which I had not encountered before. This experience provided me with valuable knowledge and insight into the possibility of gaining hands-on experience while earning credit hours in a professional office setting. I appreciate Professor O’Dell for sharing this information with us, as it will help me make informed decisions regarding my career path. One aspect that Professor O’Dell highlighted was the clinical component, which I believe is especially beneficial for students, as it offers practical training in addition to theoretical knowledge. As a student, I find this part of education particularly appealing and recognize its advantages. While learning from textbooks is essential, I believe that working through actual cases under the guidance of a licensed attorney is invaluable.

Listening to Professor Glassburn, I recognized the importance of understanding the LSAT requirements, particularly regarding the minimum scores necessary for law school admission. As a prospective law student, I see the value in these requirements. I believe this information has eased my and fellow students’ concerns as we navigate our educational paths. There are many directions to consider when making decisions about our future education. I have developed relationships with my professors; however, most interactions occur through online or Zoom courses, which can present challenges.

I appreciated the Paralegal’s insights on the advantages and challenges of their role within an attorney’s office. I often worry about making mistakes and how to effectively address them when they occur. It’s clear that paralegals in small law firms must be versatile and adapt to various responsibilities. The panel highlighted that the workflow continues when someone is out sick, which emphasizes the need for resilience in this field. This information is invaluable for understanding what aspiring paralegals can expect in different work environments. I’m also pleased to learn about the Indiana Paralegal Association, which offers support for new and aspiring paralegals. I believe this will be beneficial in helping newcomers feel more at ease as we embark on our professional journeys.

I forgot to ask one question: Is it reasonable for paralegals seeking employment to work either freelance or within a law firm, regardless of its size?

My future goal is to obtain additional certification or become licensed as a paralegal, which entails pursuing further courses or education. I believe this will be highly beneficial, as it will enhance my career prospects in the legal field.

In conclusion, I am grateful for the opportunity to attend all six workshops and found them highly beneficial. They will aid me in navigating potential employment opportunities, advancing my education at a university, and progressing toward law school. I also hope Ivy Tech will consider providing student housing in Indianapolis for clinical studies, accommodating students from different parts of the state who are willing to relocate for assignments temporarily. Participating in these workshops has been incredibly valuable and offered a balanced approach to my learning. I want to extend my thanks to Professor O’Dell for coordinating these workshops for us. I have thoroughly enjoyed this course under Professor O’Dell’s guidance.
