What fears have you overcome and how?

The fear that I had to overcome was the fear of the nighttime. I had this fear because of the events of Christmas Eve in 1981. That was when my dad’s behavior became erratic. I entered the house to investigate because the lights were not as we had left them. Someone grabbed me by my coat that night. Startled, I rushed outside without knowing the identity of the assailant. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was my dad.

It took me quite some time to overcome the fear of the nightfall. I used to sleep with the light on and the furniture blocking the bedroom door. Over time, the furniture was slowly moved away from the door, and the light was turned off. Eventually, I would bravely open my bedroom door to the rest of the apartment.

Through counseling, I have been capable of finding some peace in my ability to sleep at night. But, I still experience fear when driving or being outside at night. I worry about the possibility of someone chasing or threatening me.

This has not been an easy journey for me. I attempted to keep a sense of security by maintaining objects or potential weapons in my bedroom. I have never possessed a gun. One has never been registered in my name. I understand the devastation they can bring to the human body.
