Blog: Civic-Minded Professional (CMT)/Catholic Social Teaching (CST)

Although this is my first writing assignment on my blog here at Loyola University, my hopes and accomplishment are to be a good role model for the University as I continue my studies. I consider myself a professional by embedding these social teachings to express my beliefs in answering these questions on my blog.

1. How do you hope to grow as a Civic-Minded Professional (CMP) during your time at Loyola? If it helps, imagine the person you aspire to be at graduation.

As a civic-minded professional (CMP), I hope to explore my weaknesses and sharpen my strengths during my time here at Loyola. However, while continuing my education here at Loyola, absorbing much knowledge can only benefit my future after graduation. Since I have had exposure to life skills in management, education can provide me with book knowledge to inspire me as a paralegal. Although, the life skills I have experienced, now with schooling and my professional leadership roles in the past, are a recipe for having the right mindset as a civic-minded professional (CMP).

2. What is holding you back from being the student and professional you want to be? Are there any obstacles you see that could get in your way?

My years in management have trained me with many life skills in a leadership position. The mindset offered me much prosperity others chose not to take. By not having a high school diploma wasn’t an obstacle, yet I overcame my challenges in continuing my education. The impediment was going back to finishing my high school diploma to move forward in higher education to become the professional I see myself in the future in the legal field. The only hindrance to not completing my education would be myself.

3. What Catholic Social Teaching, or Transformative Education value most resonated with you? Consider how this value is reflected in your life now or how you hope to incorporate this value moving forward. For example, do you the see this value reflected in the way you connect with your work, your neighborhood, or with our world at large?

The reflection of my life seems to align with Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and the value that are important. I believe in volunteering by giving back to my local community within the city I live. Today the two agencies I volunteer for are Real Services and The Family Justices Center (S.O.S). Working with these two agencies has taught me many significances about the importance of humanity. The Real Service Agency is for the aging and disabled individuals who require assistance with managing their health care in their daily lives, even just for someone to hear them. With S.O.S, we take calls from men, women, and children that are physically or sexually abused that need immediate help. Both agencies work with the most vulnerable population. However, we’re connected in many ways but do not realize that the human race needs each other. Since I started volunteering, I’ve learned that the impact can affect a person’s life, even if it is one person. What a difference!

Overall, reflecting on myself and my core values represents Loyola University’s current and future teaching. I look forward to continuing to live, grow, and learn from my professors, peers, and colleagues alike.
